The British Isles is a geographical region that consist of a large group lf island lying off the north-west coast lo Europe. The British Isles is separeted from mainland Europe by the English Channel to the south and and the North Sea to the north. The two largest islands are Great Britain and Ireland. Great Britain is made up of England, Scotland and Wales; Ireland is divided into Northen Ireland, or Ulster, and Eire. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland includes all the countries of Great Britain plus Ulster. The southern part of ireland is an indipendent republic. The United Kingdom covers an area of about 242,000 sq km and its closest continental neighbours are France and Belgium.
